Home Gym Essentials

While gym options are enormous, so sometimes are their membership dues. Yes, it's nice to take a fun Jazz Aerobics class or socialize with the regulars; the same exercise can be done in the comfort of your home. I think the best option is to find a good gym and at the same time create a fitness oasis at home - this way you will always stick to your exercise routine. Home exercise equipment doesn't have to be pricey. Invest in a few basics and your home gym will be in operation:

Yoga mat

yoga mat with weightsWhether you are a fan of yoga or not, a mat is helpful for stretching, which you should always do in order to extend the muscles and avoid hurting yourself after a strenuous exercise. Professional trainers typically recommend stretching after exercise. However, if you are new to exercise, are doing a hard new circuit, or are pregnant, stretching before and after exercise is recommended. Do not forget about the original purpose of the yoga mat - buy a few yoga videos and you will quickly learn the poses. Yoga is a wonderful way to relax, stretch and tone.

Various Weights

A pair of dumbbells is a great way to tone your arms, shoulders and back. Invest in a variety of weights, so you can increase or change the weight gradually and challenge your muscles. Softer grip weights may be easier on your hands and would be my pick.

Treadmill or Elliptical

Walking is essential to your mental well-being; it strengthens muscle and bones and gives your heart a boost. Read more about walking here. When selecting a treadmill or an elliptical, look for variety of programs, accurate heart rate monitor and stable surface. Getting a mat for one will help keep it sturdy.

Stability Ball

This is a strong abs must-have. You can use the stability ball to strengthen your core, as well as back and legs. It's an excellent way to stretch as well. If you are a mom, your baby will enjoy bouncing on it in your arms and your toddler will love pushing it around. As you see, indispensable equipment.

My mom told me not to feed the baby from my spoon, since it causes cavities. Is this true? I've been sharing my food with her for a while now. She loves to eat anything I try. I am wondering if I should stop it.

Answer:

It is true. You can pass cavity-causing germs through contact - studies have shown this for over 30 years now. San Antonio dentist Dr. Lawrence Morris says a parent with active, open cavities can easily pass on the bacteria to her child. "Their enamel is a lot weaker, it's a lot thinner than permanent enamel. Cavities tend to develop a lot quicker than on permanent teeth".

It's also important to keep your own teeth clean (yes, both brushing and flossing), so you keep your own risk of cavities (and therefore passing any) to a minimum. At the same time, remember to brush your kids' teeth daily and avoid putting them to bed with a bottle or sippy cup. You can read more about Baby Teeth development here.
