Planting Perennials in 6 easy steps

hostaPerennials are an excellent choice for an easy maintenance garden that reappears every year in seasonal climates. In warmer areas, they may grow year round. These wonderful plants bloom in spring, summer and early fall and then die in fall and winter, only to reappear the next spring. Since they need time to establish a strong root system before winter, it is best to plant them in the spring, but if planted well, autumn plantings can also withstand the fall in temperatures. Some of the popular perennials include Geranium "Rozanne" (my top pick), Primula "Wanda", Hosta, Red Valerian and Daylilies.

The planting process is fairly simple:

1. Select the area and ensure there is enough distance between plants. A good 20 inches is a rule of thumb, but the directions on the plant will generally identify the planting distance. Leaving enough distance will allow the plants enough space to spread around.

rake2. Examine the planned planting area to determine how much sun it gets. If the area is open to at least 6 hours of sun, pick the perennials that love the sun. If there is partial sun, pick partial sun/shade plants. And if it's mostly shady, pick the ones that require shade to prosper. It's very important to know how much sun the planting area gets, otherwise the plants will burn/wilt. Even better, sketch how you plan to plant them and types of perennials you like, so shopping will be a breeze.

3. Work the ground. Rake the area, so it's easier to dig the hole for planting. Depending on quality of soil, I would also strongly recommend adding the soil with minerals and vitamins.

4. Dig a wide hole about 3 inches deep.

get the plant out5. Most of the perennials I buy usually come in rounded pots. I have an easy trick to get them out of the pot. Place the pot on a side on the ground and gently roll it back and forth. You will see that the plant will easily slide out after that - just like getting a cake out of a hot pan, place your hand on the top of the plant and gently slide it down. Turn it back up on your other hand and place in the hole you just made in the ground. Cover the area around to ensure the plant is comfortably and sturdily in.

watering perennials6. Generously water the area. Read the label on each plant to know how much watering should be done - don't overdo it but make sure plants get enough water.
I would recommend watering first thing in the morning when the sun is not high yet.

Since these plants will appear every year, enjoy and watch them grow!
