Savory Salmon recipe

savory salmon jpgSalmon is one of the healthiest types of fish you can find. It has no carbs and has plenty of Omega 3 and good fats. This recipe is savory - you mix sweet and salty flavors with some herbs.

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 4 salmon steaks (4-6 oz)
  • half a cup Dijon old-fashioned or grainy mustard
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 4 tbsp honey
  • 1 cup chopped fresh dill
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

1. Prepare the marinade - mix the mustard, olive oil, honey and fresh dill. Leave a little fresh dill for garnish.

2. Rinse the salmon and season with salt and pepper on both sides

3. Marinade the salmon in the honey-mustard-dill mixture for 15 minutes

4. Heat the pan to medium low, place salmon on the pan and cook on each side for about 5 minutes or until each side is cooked (salmon will turn a pale pink color inside)

5. Garnish with remaining fresh dill. Serve with young potatoes or rice. If preparing as described, each steak will yield approximately 400 calories.

My mom told me not to feed the baby from my spoon, since it causes cavities. Is this true? I've been sharing my food with her for a while now. She loves to eat anything I try. I am wondering if I should stop it.

Answer:

It is true. You can pass cavity-causing germs through contact - studies have shown this for over 30 years now. San Antonio dentist Dr. Lawrence Morris says a parent with active, open cavities can easily pass on the bacteria to her child. "Their enamel is a lot weaker, it's a lot thinner than permanent enamel. Cavities tend to develop a lot quicker than on permanent teeth".

It's also important to keep your own teeth clean (yes, both brushing and flossing), so you keep your own risk of cavities (and therefore passing any) to a minimum. At the same time, remember to brush your kids' teeth daily and avoid putting them to bed with a bottle or sippy cup. You can read more about Baby Teeth development here.
