Guitar Shop for Kids

When are kids ready for music lessons?

girl playing guitarMusic means a lot of fun to kids. They love listening to it, dancing to it and are exposed to music from the first days around you, as you most likely are listening to it at home or in your car. Parents try to get their kids involved in different activities early but kids need to be ready for piano or guitar lessons.

So ask yourself if your child can do the following, and if your answer is YES, then start the music lessons now.

  • What is his attention span? Toddlers can't sit still for more than 10 minutes or so. Being able to pay attention for 20-30 minutes is the first sign of readiness.
  • Does he know the alphabet? Being able to recite the alphabet forward and backward is essential to reading music.
  • Can he count? Basic counting skills are important to understanding various beats.

The Music Teachers National Association recommends starting music classes when students are starting first grade. All children are different, so yours may be ready sooner.
